Do you sell plans?
Since all our work is custom, we are not able to sell plans or give out information on the projects beyond what is shared on our website. Our goal is always to design creatively in ways that work with the specifics of our clients' needs and location. So while we are unable to sell plans, we would be more than happy to work with you to create your visions and dreams.
Can you provide me with information about specific materials or products from projects on your website?

Can you design in my state?
Yes! We can work in all states that do not require a licensed architect for residential design. However, we are NCARB certified and are licensed in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, Arizona, Montana and Florida. We are also capable of acquiring a license in your state if necessary.
Can you work with my builder or can you recommend one?
We frequently collaborate with builders our clients trust. When needed, we can also recommend experienced builders familiar with high-end residential construction.
Can you help evaluate land before purchase?
Yes. We often assist clients with site evaluation, helping identify opportunities and constraints related to views, solar orientation, access, topography and long-term livability.
How do you help clients understand complex design decisions?
We explain design decisions clearly and visually, using drawings, models and three-dimensional walkthroughs so clients feel confident and informed at every stage.
How early should we contact an architect in the process?
Ideally, we are involved as early as possible – even before land purchase. Early involvement allows us to influence key decisions that significantly impact the success of the home.
What is the first step to start working with JMAD?
The first step is an introductory conversation to understand your goals, timeline and site conditions. From there, we outline a clear path forward tailored to your project.
Do I actually need an architect?
Architects are licensed professionals responsible not only for the aesthetic vision but also for the technical execution of a project – ensuring structural integrity, code compliance, and safety while coordinating the entire process from concept through construction. Builders, draftsmen, and real estate agents who offer design services do not have the same depth of architectural training, historical knowledge, or comprehensive design education that architects develop through years of formal study and professional experience. Interior designers are highly trained in shaping the look and feel of interior environments, but they are not trained to design the structure, form, and spatial volume of a building. Interior design is an integral part of our architectural process, so we define the layout, built-ins, material palettes, and overall spatial experience that shape how a home is lived in. Interior designers, while collaborating with JMAD, focus on more specialized layers such as furnishings, styling, and selections. Because these elements must align with the architectural vision, we lead the process holistically to ensure every detail supports a cohesive and intentional result.
What’s the difference between a full architectural service and a design-build service?
A design-build firm brings design and construction together under one contract, offering efficiency and streamlined decision-making, while a full-service luxury residential architecture firm leads every aspect of the design process—from architecture and interior framework to material palettes and construction oversight—ensuring a cohesive vision carried from concept through completion. We can provide a full architectural service as stated above, however, at JMAD, we operate as a hybrid of these models: we collaborate closely with a trusted builder early in the process to align costs, feasibility, and constructability, while maintaining full authorship and control over the design. By remaining independent from construction yet deeply involved throughout it, we are able to protect the integrity of the design at every stage, coordinate all collaborators, and deliver a more refined, intentional, and fully realized home that meets your budget.
