BIG SKY, MONTANA

Montana ski-in, ski-out home

Designed for a challenging site in Big Sky, the lot is very wooded and rocky and has a lot of variation to the elevations of grade. Different community restrictions, building code regulations and HOA restrictions as well. So figuring out where to situate the house on the lot was the first and foremost challenge.

Knowing that there are valley views behind the house and mountain views in front of the house, our clients wanted to capture those views as they were primary reason they bought the property. We worked from that as a starting point, then from there, figured out how to work with the land. We came up with was a stepped approach to the house, one that responds to the topography and conforms with grade.

Our client wanted traditional mountain home characteristics but also some modern and industrial elements. So we designed in some exposed metal and incorporated stone, anchoring the home to the land which speaks to some of the more traditional building style of the area. In addition, wood siding and soffits bring warmth to the material palette and respond to the wooded environment it is set within.
